Hotel Redux 2003, Video (cartoon animation), Duration: 11 minutes
To the guests staying at The Adelphi in Liverpool, one of the best-known hotels in the North-West of England, everything seems a model of calm and efficiency. But what really goes on behind the doors marked “Staff Only”? From the BBC America website
The Adelphi Hotel, a landmark of Liverpool’s city centre since 1826, became a national institution in 1997 with the BBC broadcast of the seminal eight-part ‘fly-on-the-wall’ documentary Hotel. While Hotel followed the day-to-day management of the Adelphi and the ‘real lives’ of it’s staff, from the formidable manager Eileen, to the bickering between the Adelphi’s Chef and Operations Manager ‘just cook will yer’ Brian, Hotel Redux pushes the facts a little bit more in the direction of fiction. While Hotel sometimes portrayed the staff as almost two-dimensional characters, Hotel Redux turns them – quite literally – into cartoon characters. |
